Anesthesia
If you are concerned about pain or sensations during a dental procedure, consider anesthesia. We specialize in a wide range of dental services at Stuart Oral Surgery in St. Carmel, Indiana. Many of these services can be less invasive or painful with the use of local or general anesthesia. However, getting put to sleep can concern some patients. Learn about anesthesia and how we use this procedure at the dentist’s office.
Types of Anesthesia
Anesthesia refers to medical treatments involving deep sleep and/or paralysis that is temporary and controlled by medication. We use three types of anesthesia at the dentist’s office on patients for dental procedures. These include:
- Local
- General
- Regional
Local anesthesia is most common for dental work. Patients receive a numbing injection at the source of the procedure, such as the gum tissue of a wisdom tooth. Regional anesthesia is more extensive and affects the general area. In this type of anesthesia, the entire mouth is numbed using injectables or medication to reduce pain and sensations.
General anesthesia, often called getting put to sleep, involves an anesthesiologist who provides intravenous drugs and monitors the patient’s condition throughout the procedure. Most dentists do not need general anesthesia for oral procedures.
Using Anesthesia at the Dentist
There are plenty of times when anesthesia is used at the dentist. If a patient requires fillings, local and regional anesthesias are applied to reduce pain during the procedure. In addition, tooth extraction always involves anesthesia.
